By Hook or By Crook

Having been addicted to crochet since age 23, I’m finally gonna have a blog about it.

Continue here, or not continue… That is the question.

Do I keep this blog or do I absorb it into my other blog? Such a conundrum. I think keep it. But I have a lot of photos and stories to gather and add. Old photos. New photos. And work to catch up on. There is the cowboy hat I’m crocheting (pattern out of Happy Hooker). There is the looooong red scarf I made last year and am making the flowers to happy it up now. There are the football-themed holiday stockings. And the many, many blankets for babies I’ve gifted over the years.

So I guess keep.

And perhaps once the kids have moved off to their adventures in travel across country, I’ll have some time to work on that. If the truffles don’t take over my life.

Slippers

Pattern from Annie’s Attic “Sassy Stripes in Crochet”.

I added a little embellishment around the uppers because a) it didn’t feel finished and b) it wasn’t high enough to feel warm and I was going for warm. The two uppers don’t match in style either. If I was really feeling fussy (and I’m not because I’m just going to be schlepping around the house in them and nobody will be seeing them aside from this photo and they were my very first slippers ever) I would have redone the first one completely because I realized as I was making the second that I’d done the first one wrong. But it’s all a learning experience…

Stocking for Christmas

with 2 comments

I made a very quick and easy Christmas Stocking for Michael the week prior to the holiday. We all have our own made from a victorian pattern I got from a Better Homes and Gardens book (will have to do a little research to see if I can find the book on Amazon or something to provide a link) but I didn’t want to try and pull that one off in the time alloted when I decided to make one for M.

So I went online and did a quick search for available patterns before finding a very simple and fast (and free) crochet pattern from Lion Brand (you’ll need to register). As you can see, I made a few little modifications (I used cotton yarn because that’s what all of ours are made in, used blue and white yarn and did not make the little tree motif but instead just put easy little criss cross snowflakes on it which ended up looking a bit like a starry night instead…) to their idea, but nothing too drastic. The pattern itself remains unchanged.

Christmas Stocking

It was just nice to have something finished for a change. So tired of the UFO’s. :)

No new photo…

But I did finish the Christmas Stocking.

I’ll get a photo up here in a day or two. I’m down for the count with a migraine at the moment. I just thought it was a good idea to post something after CM’s comment. heh. I haven’t gotten any further on those. Ran out of steam. Hated the look of them. Hated the pattern. They will soon be frogged so I can use the yarn for something else if that fuzzy stuff will come apart. And so my first posted project will be no more. But hey, I’ll get something up here. There are a couple of older project photos out on flickr. If you’re desperate to know if I can actually crochet. Wish I had all projects documented somewhere.

*sigh*

Working on the first project I’ve done for a while. Making a pair of slippers (aka footies, so they are called in the pattern).

Photo (which is admittedly fuzzy) shows the bottoms which are finished and awaiting the tops. I had them finished the other day. Tonight I’m attaching the first of the finished tops. I’m using my new hook from Mineral Point. :)

Kick off…

with 3 comments

As I mentioned on my main blog, I bought some yarn yesterday. Haven’t got a single idea in mind about what I want to work on. But I liked the yarn. According to a knitty friend, I was simply participating in some “stash enhancement” so it’s all good. I knew this. The big box sitting in storage can attest to that. But Keli would say that this is perfectly alright with her. She doesn’t have any money for yarn and so going through my stash in storage tonight was a great deal. Now she has a lot of yarn to frog from my UFO’s which she can put into her hats, scarves and whatever else she comes up with.

So here I am. Embarking on a blog about my crochet endeavors. And whatever other crafty things I decide to try. But mostly crochet. It’s what I do. Because crochet is cool. Those of us who do it believe in it and want to keep it alive. And some of us do it because we are all thumbs and cannot knit. Or use that as an excuse because we do not want to for whatever reason.

I for one take pride in the fact that my mother was a big knitter and has not been able to master the crochet thing. But that’s my issue for another time and place. ;)
